EDUCATION
The Dual Vocational System
In Germany, the “dual vocational education and training” (DTvet), or “Ausbildung,” system is a key component of the vocational education system, combining practical training in a company with theoretical learning at a vocational school.
Dual System
The “dual” aspect refers to the two learning venues: a company (where apprentices learn practical skills) and a vocational school (where they receive theoretical knowledge).
Apprenticeship Model
DTvet programs are essentially apprenticeships, where young people are employed by a company while also attending vocational school.
Duration
Programs typically last between two and three and a half years, depending on the specific occupation. There are also short time training courses.
Structure
Apprentices spend part of their time in the company, gaining practical experience, and part of their time at the vocational school, receiving theoretical training.
Financial Aspects
Companies pay apprentices a wage, and they are responsible for the costs of company-based training.
Progression
DTvet can lead to skilled worker qualifications, and further training and education are possible at post-secondary and tertiary levels.
Pre-Vocational Training
There are pre-vocational training measures available for young people who need to upgrade their knowledge and skills or who have difficulty finding an apprenticeship.
Other VET Programs
Besides the dual system, there are also school-based VET programs, such as full time vocational schools, which lead to different qualifications.
Role of Federal States
Responsibility for education, including VET, lies with the Federal States (Bundesländer).
Importance of TVET
Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is seen as crucial for economic development and employability.
