Ocean Research
& Training.
Understanding and managing the ocean for a sustainable future — through physics, chemistry, biology, and geology — with Cape Verde at the centre of Africa's marine innovation.
Programme
Embracing a Sustainable Relationship
We view sustainability as a universal responsibility. By partnering with start-ups, multinationals, and government bodies, we foster the integration of eco-friendly operations into business models. Our mission is to tackle challenges like waste reduction and resource conservation through advanced Research & Development.
Ocean science is crucial for addressing global challenges like climate change and food security. LAGA-IVCR positions Cape Verde as a leading node for marine research and ocean-based TVET across the African continent.
Areas of Study
Studies currents, waves, tides, temperatures, and the complex interactions between ocean, atmosphere, and coastlines.
Focuses on seawater composition, dissolved gases, nutrient cycles, and the distribution and impact of pollutants.
Examines marine organisms, their ecological interactions, physiology, and the dynamics of ocean ecosystems.
Investigates seafloor structure, plate tectonics, sediment distribution, and the geological history of ocean basins.
Research-Led Training
Training Through Research (TTR)
We apply the "Training-through-Research" approach (e.g., ECOP Programme). Students engage in intensive, hands-on training combining rigorous theory with real-world fieldwork and data practice.
Specialised Fields
Deep-dive programmes in applied ocean disciplines, bridging engineering, biology, and environmental science.
Design, construction, and operation of systems in or adjacent to the ocean — including coastal structures and offshore platforms.
Detailed study of marine organisms, life history, and characteristics — with applications in conservation and aquaculture.
Tools of the Trade
Offshore data collection platforms
Basic & scientific diving systems
Remote sensing & telemetry
Underwater robotics & ROVs
Integrated ocean monitoring
United Nations Ocean Decade 2021–2030
The UN General Assembly proclaimed the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development to foster scientific research and technological innovation — generating the knowledge needed for a sustainable ocean economy.
Cape Verde & African Innovation
We are prioritising Cape Verde and other African countries ready for new discovery. Our goal is sustainable growth through ocean natural resources — applying TVET for educational and economic value across the continent.
Courses & Career Pathways
Hands-on, research-aligned programmes building the next generation of marine scientists and ocean engineers.
"Understanding the ocean is crucial for addressing global challenges like climate change, food security, and the long-term sustainability of coastal economies."
